Managing Change

Change in your little ones life can be hard. Here are some tips to help you and your family get through this period.

Are you moving house?

Has there been an arrival of a new sibling?

Is your little one Starting day care or kinder?

These are just some milestones that your toddler might be heading towards and here are some top tips to manage these transitions.

1. Try not to overcompensate.

Your little one needs to feel heard and experience your presence throughout these changes but they still need the guard rails up. Holding boundaries and maintaining the “parent” role so to speak is imperative during this change. Toddlers push doors they don’t want to open. So offer kindness during their emotional ups and downs but don’t let this sway your ability to hold space in times of change.

2. Keep the routine as much as possible and if it’s all changed help them understand their new one.

Take the time to explain changes and give them the benefit that they understand enough to take it onboard. Be open in communication and allow time for them to ask questions.

3. Understand the little things are their big things.

Your little one may be more reactive for a period of time during new change. Acknowledge their upsets, let them feel heard, don’t use bribery or distractions.

4. Pre-prepare to help lessen your load during this time.

Get some meals stored away, clear your schedule of anything not essential and give yourself plenty of time to get to places to avoid a tense rush in and out of the car, especially if your little one is just starting school or day care.
